Action Fraud takes reports of fraud in England, Wales and Northern Ireland; Police Scotland in Scotland.

Step 1: the route, in order

Work through the steps below in order. Skipping ahead usually costs time.

1. Read the message on the login screen. It says whether the lock is temporary or permanent.
2. For a temporary lock, remove any unofficial apps, plugins or tweaks, wait, then unlock from accounts.snapchat.com or the app.
3. For a permanent lock or ban, go to support.snapchat.com, choose 'My account is locked', and fill in the form.
4. If you were hacked, reset the password by email or phone first. If both were changed, use Snapchat Support's hacked-account form.
5. Use the official Snapchat app only, on your usual device.

Step 2: proof to gather

• Your username and the email and phone on the account.
• Screenshots of the lock message.
• A list of any third-party apps or tweaks you used, so you can remove them.
• For hacks: any emails from Snapchat about changes.

Notes for United Kingdom

Fraud involving money can be reported to Action Fraud (Police Scotland in Scotland). For a business, make the details on the platform match Companies House.

Step 3: what to write

• If someone else had access, say when and how you found out.
• In the support form, say the account is yours, what you saw, and that you have removed any unofficial apps.

Common mistakes

• Making a new account on the same device during a device ban.
• Logging in on modified Snapchat apps or with plugins that save snaps.
• Trying to unlock many times in a row.

Step 4: after submitting

• Once unlocked, turn on two-factor and review connected apps.
• If a permanent lock stands, you can still ask Snapchat about downloading your data through accounts.snapchat.com.
• Watch the email on the account for Snapchat Support replies.

Step 5: if you are stuck

• The device is banned along with the account.
• The lock has not lifted and Support does not reply.

What to send

• Your username or profile link.
• A screenshot of the notice or error, with the date visible.
• Which email or phone is on the account (just which one, never a code).
• What happened before it started, in a few lines.

Please do not send passwords, login codes, card numbers or access tokens.
